Side by Side and Next Steps Programs
Side by Side – Learning is Fun: Our Side by Side program harnesses the creativity and energy of a great group of teens to mentor at-risk local children, ages 5-8, in meaningful seasonal activities. They work side by side – and it’s hard to tell which age group loves the dynamic process of learning together more!
Next Steps – Youth Environmental Education: The youngsters in Side by Side kept asking to return, even after they turned 9 years old. So, we created the Next Steps program to keep them involved and engaged. In Next Steps, a small group of teens works with a group of students, ages 9-12. Environmental education, conservation, sustainable farming practices and cooking with whole foods are recurring themes.
- Seasonal activities: Side by Side and Next Step workshops take place on Saturdays during the school year. Side by Seasonal activities include cider pressing, cooking and baking, sewing, seasonal crafts, garden activities and regular visits to the animals at the adjacent biodynamic farm and dairy. Storytelling, drama, book-making, singing, poetry and other literacy activities round out the day. Next Step activities include gardening, exploring nature, building birdhouses, cooking and working together.
- Teen Mentors: We have a loyal and growing group of teens who have given nearly 6,000 volunteer hours over the last three years. Many teens participate in Side by Side throughout their entire high school career.
